New baby malaria vaccine approved, saves lives in Africa
A new malaria vaccine specifically for babies has been approved, marking a significant advancement in combating the disease. This offers a crucial treatment option for the most vulnerable population. The approved vaccine, Coartem Baby, developed by Novartis in collaboration with Medicines for Malaria Venture, provides an optimized dose for infants. Trials involved eight African nations, which are expected to be among the first to utilize the vaccine. Previously, only vaccines for older children existed, posing overdose risks for younger patients. Experts highlight the vaccine's potential to reduce malaria-related deaths, especially in sub-Saharan Africa where the disease is most prevalent.
