Scientists identified neural mechanisms behind misophonia, a disorder where sounds like chewing or sniffing trigger intense irritation or anger, affecting one in five people. Published in Human Brain Mapping, researchers from Montreal and Oklahoma found the anterior insular cortex, part of the brain's salience network, plays a key role. Analysis of fMRI data from 162 adults and surveys of 777 people showed symptom severity correlates with synchronization between this region and areas handling sound, motor, and movement planning. The study revealed misophonia exists on a continuous spectrum, not as distinct sick or healthy groups, as statistical patterns vanished when dividing samples. This activity was independent of anxiety, depression, or autism traits, offering new avenues for neuroimaging research.
