Netherlands proposes tougher penalties for hard drug crimes to combat international gangs
The Netherlands is set to impose stricter penalties for drug-related crimes. Justice Minister David van Weel introduced a bill that raises maximum sentences for smuggling hard drugs from 12 to 16 years and for trafficking from 8 to 12 years. The changes aim to deter international drug gangs by aligning Dutch laws with those in Germany and Belgium. Possession of large quantities of hard drugs will also see increased penalties, from 6 to 8 years. These measures are part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety and reduce organized crime. The Netherlands has been viewed as a liberal country regarding drugs, but officials are now focusing on tougher enforcement.
