Nebraska engineers create self-healing artificial muscle for robots
Engineers at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln have developed a self-healing artificial muscle for robots, mimicking the repair capabilities of human skin. This technology could revolutionize soft robotics and wearable systems. The team's artificial muscle uses a multi-layer design to detect, locate, and autonomously repair damage. It identifies damage via electrical networks, then uses heat to melt and reseal the middle layer. The system then resets using electromigration. This innovation could extend the lifespan of electronics and robotics, reducing waste and improving durability. The research was presented at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation and was a finalist for a Best Paper Award.
