Nature reclaims abandoned Hashima Island near Nagasaki
Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima or "Battleship Island," is a deserted island near Nagasaki, Japan. Abandoned for over 50 years, it is now being reclaimed by nature, with its once-thriving structures decaying. Originally a coal mining hub in the 1800s, Hashima was transformed by Mitsubishi into a community with housing and amenities. However, harsh living conditions and the eventual depletion of coal led to its abandonment. In 2015, Hashima was considered for UNESCO World Heritage status, but its dark history of forced labor during World War II sparked controversy. Despite this, the island has become a tourist attraction, drawing visitors interested in its past.
