NATO jets scrambled after Ukrainian drone veers into Lithuania
Italian fighter jets scrambled from Siauliai air base after a drone exploded in Lithuanian airspace, initially suspected as a Russian attack, but Ukraine later claimed the drone as its own. NATO confirmed the Eurofighter intervention, with an official stating the alliance is ready to respond to threats around the clock. Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman said the drone was part of a Kyiv operation against Russian military targets, and the incident may have been caused by Russian electronic warfare diverting it. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda had earlier accused Moscow of extending its aggression to NATO's eastern flank. The incident follows Saturday's downing of two drones over Romania's Black Sea airspace and heightened tensions at Leipzig airport, where a drone was found in August. Kyiv apologized for any risks caused and pledged to share information to prevent future incidents.
