NATO jets scramble after suspected drone explosion near Lithuania-Latvia border
NATO fighter jets were scrambled Sunday after a suspected drone entered Lithuanian airspace near the Latvian border, with authorities saying the object may have detonated on its own. The incident triggered multiple air alerts in the region. Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said pilots tracking the object in the Biržai district could not visually identify it due to difficult weather conditions. The drone's origin remains unclear, and military personnel are inspecting the area where radio signal was lost. The event is the latest in a series of drone incidents along NATO's eastern flank, many believed to be spillover from Russia's war in Ukraine. It follows Romania's announcement Saturday that F-16 jets shot down two Geran-family attack drones over the Black Sea.
