Nationwide, magic mushroom use drives poison center calls up
A new study reveals a significant increase in "magic mushroom" use, leading to a surge in calls to poison control centers nationwide. This rise is particularly notable in Denver and among adolescents and adults over 30. The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found a 201% increase in poison control calls related to psilocybin exposure among adults between 2019 and 2023. This coincides with the decriminalization of psilocybin in Colorado and other states. While the sale of psilocybin remains illegal in Colorado, its decriminalization has led to increased use and a need for more data collection and regulation, as state lawmakers are now considering new legislation.
