National Route 349's mountain alternative nears completion in Fukushima and Miyagi
The "mountain route" alternative for National Route 349, damaged by a typhoon, is nearing completion with tunnel construction. A public walking event is scheduled for October 25, 2025, allowing access to a 4km section including the Saruhachiiwa Tunnel before its opening. This alternative route aims to resolve issues with the original road, such as narrow sections and sharp curves, by utilizing multiple tunnels. The project is expected to open in fiscal year 2025, improving connectivity between Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures. The Saruhachiiwa Tunnel is 1621 meters long, and other tunnels and bridges on the 6km route are already finished. Remaining work includes drainage and ancillary facilities.
