Nassau Police Shoot Man Who Attacked With Knife in Westbury

A 27-year-old man was shot in the face by Nassau County police on Long Island after he allegedly attacked people with a knife and smashed a police car window on the night of August 3. He is in stable condition at a hospital, and no officers or bystanders were injured. Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said officers responded to a report of a man acting erratically and attempting to stab someone near Brush Hollow Road in Westbury. The suspect, identified as Adrian Thompson, rushed from bushes and shattered the passenger-side window of a patrol car; an officer inside fired several missed shots, and a second officer shot Thompson in the face after exiting the vehicle. Thompson, a former Columbia University medical student living with his parents, had prior police contact in April for mental health issues and is reportedly experiencing depression. He faces two counts of menacing a police officer, with possible upgraded charges pending, and is expected to be arraigned at his hospital bed.
