NASA study confirms sea level rise for Pacific Islands is unavoidable
New NASA research indicates that Pacific Island nations will face at least a 20-centimeter rise in sea levels over the next 30 years, regardless of future greenhouse gas emissions reductions. This rise will lead to significantly increased high-tide flooding days. By the 2050s, areas in Tuvalu could see an average of 25 flood days annually, while Kiribati may experience up to 65 flood days each year. NASA's findings highlight the consistent and severe flooding risks faced by these nations compared to other regions. The agency has released detailed maps showing vulnerable areas in several Pacific Island nations. Researchers aim to improve flood mapping and data collection to support mitigation efforts, despite challenges in obtaining on-the-ground data.
