NASA satellite captures real-time images of greenhouse gas plumes over US, Pakistan, and South Africa
NASA's Tanager-1 satellite has captured images of large plumes of methane and carbon dioxide over the US, Pakistan, and South Africa. These emissions, detected using advanced imaging technology, can help identify major pollution sources. The satellite revealed a methane plume from a landfill in Karachi, releasing 1.2 tonnes of methane per hour. In Texas, a plume from the Permian Basin was found to emit 400 kg of methane hourly, while a coal plant in South Africa released 600 tonnes of CO2 each hour. This new data differs from previous studies by providing real-time information on greenhouse gas emissions. The Tanager-1 satellite aims to scan vast areas daily, helping to locate and address methane leaks more effectively.
