NASA launches new Probe Explorer mission category to study space phenomena

phys.org

NASA has introduced a new category of space missions called Probe Explorers. This category will bridge the gap between larger Flagship missions and smaller projects. Two proposed missions are the Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite and the Probe Far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics. Each proposed mission will receive $5 million for a 12-month concept study. A detailed evaluation will follow, with a decision expected in 2026 on which mission will launch in 2032. The selected mission will be the first in the Probe Explorer program. The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite aims to study supermassive black holes, while the Probe Far-Infrared Mission will investigate far-infrared radiation in space. Both missions are part of NASA's ongoing Explorers Program, which has been active since 1958.
