NASA develops next-generation helicopter for Mars exploration
NASA's Ingenuity helicopter, which flew on Mars in April 2021, completed 72 flights, far exceeding its initial goal of five. It provided valuable data about Mars' terrain and atmosphere, showcasing the potential for aerial exploration. NASA is now developing a next-generation Mars helicopter, larger than Ingenuity and capable of carrying science payloads up to 11 pounds. This new design aims to explore areas inaccessible to rovers and conduct more extensive scientific investigations. To improve navigation, the new helicopter will feature advanced systems to handle varied Martian landscapes. Engineers are also testing new rotor blades for better performance in Mars' thin atmosphere, marking significant advancements in space technology.
