NASA astronauts to vote from space in upcoming US elections
NASA astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) will vote in the upcoming US elections on November 5, 2024. This marks over 25 years of astronauts voting from space, a practice that began in 1997. Astronauts will use NASA's Near Space Network to send their votes back to Earth. They will fill out a Federal Post Card Application to request an absentee ballot, complete it digitally, and upload it to the ISS computer system. Two astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, will vote from space after their mission was extended due to issues with Boeing's spacecraft. Their ballots will be encrypted and processed by county clerks after traveling through NASA's communication systems.
