Namibian farmer Johnny Hanekom dies in Maltahöhe aircraft crash

Respected Namibian farmer and businessman Jan-Hendrik 'Johnny' Hanekom, 69, died Sunday in an aircraft crash on his farm Sandrucken in the Maltahöhe district. Police opened an inquest docket after witnesses saw the aircraft's flaps fold from wind pressure, causing the glider to nose-dive. Hanekom had completed one successful patrol flight before crashing on a second flight. Hanekom owned Johnny's Auto in Keetmanshoop and was a prominent Meatmaster farmer. The Helmeringhausen Farmers' Association called his death "a big tree that has fallen," praising his significant contributions to agriculture and business mentorship.
