ChatGPT operator OpenAI lost a copyright infringement case against GEMA in Munich. The court ruled that using song lyrics without a license violates German copyright law. The Munich Regional Court found that AI applications using song lyrics for training and output without proper licensing constitute copyright infringement. OpenAI will be ordered to pay damages. The case involved nine song lyrics, including those by Herbert Grönemeyer. The ruling is not final and OpenAI is expected to appeal.
