Mumbai mother wins Rs 61.5 lakh from LIC 12 years after son's death claim rejected

India's National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered LIC to pay over Rs 61.5 lakh plus 9% annual interest to a Mumbai mother, 12 years after her son's death claim was rejected. The ruling overturns LIC's denial of all five insurance policies. The commission found LIC failed to prove the policyholder, Nitin Gambhir, knew he had diabetes when applying in June 2010. A hospital record from September 2010 mentioning diabetes for two months did not establish his awareness, and a 2013 record described him as non-diabetic. The commission also ruled LIC received premiums for all policies before Gambhir's hospitalization, and no link was established between his leg condition and the cardiac arrest causing his 2013 death. The payout includes Rs 60 lakh sum assured, Rs 1 lakh compensation, and Rs 50,000 costs.
