Mpox outbreak in DR Congo raises alarm
The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a Simian smallpox (Mpox) outbreak, with 279 deaths in 2024. In 2023, 654 deaths were reported. Children under 15 account for 70% of cases and 87% of deaths. The outbreak is widespread, with cases in 23 out of 26 provinces. The World Health Organization notes Mpox's similarity to Ebola. Precautions include avoiding contact with sick animals and bushmeat.
