Mothers and expectant mothers need better information about newborn screening tests

A qualitative study of 23 pregnant women and new mothers found general support for newborn screening tests alongside significant unmet information needs, highlighting a need for improved prenatal education. Researchers interviewed 10 pregnant women and 13 mothers within six months postpartum at a university hospital. Thematic analysis produced four main themes, including decision factors and screening experiences, with no notable differences by employment or maternal status. Researchers recommend consistent, evidence-based communication from healthcare professionals to counter misinformation. Future studies should examine parents who decline newborn screening to better understand participation barriers.
