More than 150 female inmates killed in Goma prison fire during jailbreak, UN reports
More than 150 female inmates were raped and burned to death during a jailbreak in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. The incident occurred when male inmates set fire to the prison while escaping on January 27, according to a UN spokesperson. Of the 165 women who were raped, only nine to 13 survived the fire. The Muzenze prison is now empty and in ruins after over 4,000 detainees escaped. The DRC government condemned the violence as a "barbaric crime." The UN reported ongoing sexual violence in the region, including allegations of 52 women being raped by Congolese troops in South Kivu. The M23 rebel group, which claims control of Goma, has called for a humanitarian ceasefire amid ongoing conflict.
