Mom overcomes misdiagnosis and liver failure to reclaim active life after transplant
Kahley Schiller, a 44-year-old mother from Kansas, was misdiagnosed with fatigue due to her busy lifestyle. In 2019, she was found to have acute liver failure from autoimmune hepatitis and given just 90 days to live without a transplant. After a rapid decline in health, Schiller was placed on the transplant list. She received a liver transplant in October 2019, but complications during surgery led to four minor strokes. Despite these challenges, she recovered and spent two weeks in the hospital. Now five years post-transplant, Schiller has returned to her active lifestyle, practicing Pilates and running regularly. She continues to take antirejection medications and undergo monthly blood tests to monitor her health.
