Mississauga moves to expropriate two Port Credit homes after 50 arrests
The City of Mississauga is attempting to expropriate two homes in Port Credit after hundreds of police, fire, and bylaw visits over 18 months, with plans to demolish them for a parking lot. The move marks an unusual use of expropriation law, typically reserved for infrastructure projects. Peel Police reported over 50 arrests linked to the properties at 34 and 36 Peter Street, citing disturbances, assaults, weapons, and drug activity. Councillor Stephen Dasko said the city exhausted other options, including closing orders, which were deemed too slow due to court backlogs. The owners' lawyer says they are working with the city on a solution, and a hearing of necessity has been requested. Legal experts note expropriation is costly and not necessarily faster than alternative remedies, with disputes over property value likely to extend the process.
