Miss Nigeria shines at Miss Universe after overcoming xenophobic abuse
Chidimma Adetshina, Miss Nigeria, finished second in the Miss Universe competition and was named Miss Africa and Oceania. She expressed pride in her achievements after facing xenophobic abuse during her earlier participation in Miss South Africa. Adetshina, born in South Africa to Nigerian parents, dealt with controversy over her nationality. South African authorities had threatened to revoke her identity papers due to allegations against her mother, which were dismissed as she was an infant at the time. Following the backlash, Adetshina won the Miss Nigeria title to qualify for Miss Universe. She plans to seek therapy to cope with the trauma from the trolling. She is the highest-placed black African woman in Miss Universe since 2019.
