Minneapolis shooting that killed 3 began as custody exchange

A deadly shooting in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday that began as a custody exchange left three people dead and six injured, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The shooter, 35-year-old Carlton Johnson II, died in an exchange of gunfire with police. The incident began around 4:30 p.m. when Johnson shot the child's mother outside Shoreline Plaza, then wounded two employees inside the building. He proceeded to the ninth floor, where he shot two residents, 63-year-old Dale Henry Spry and 61-year-old Muse Abdi Afrah, who both died. Two police officers were also shot and injured. Johnson was challenging an eviction order from the building, and authorities are investigating whether the victims were targeted. Minneapolis Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson reported 157 officers responded, with the first entering the building within minutes of the initial call.
