Michigan residents face REAL ID deadline for domestic travel and federal access

Michigan residents must obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID by May 7, 2025, to fly domestically or enter certain federal facilities. The new licenses feature a star in a silhouette of Michigan. To upgrade to a REAL ID, residents need to visit the Secretary of State with required documents. There is no fee if done during renewal; otherwise, a small correction fee applies. After May 7, 2025, standard IDs can still be used for activities like cashing checks and voting. REAL IDs are not required for jury duty.
