Michigan removes Upper Peninsula clerks from election roles over hand count plans
Two clerks in Michigan's Upper Peninsula were removed from their election duties after planning to hand count votes in the upcoming election. State officials stated that this method does not comply with regulations requiring the use of voting machines. The clerks, Tom Schierkolk and David LaMere, intended to conduct the hand count before the official canvassing process. Their responsibilities will now be handled by the deputy treasurer and assistance from another township clerk. State Elections Director Jonathan Brater emphasized the need for secure ballot handling and compliance with election laws. He noted that failure to follow these procedures could result in criminal charges.
