Metroid Dread sales surge after new 2D Metroid game reveal
Nintendo's 2021 game Metroid Dread has surged in popularity on the eShop following the announcement of a new 2D Metroid title, Metroid Ravenous, which is set for release on January 28, 2027. The renewed interest comes as Metroid Dread climbed past titles like Super Mario Galaxy and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in sales charts. The game originally earned an 88% aggregate review score on Metacritic and was praised as one of 2021's best titles. The franchise's 2D entries have maintained a loyal following since the original 1986 NES debut, with developer MercurySteam returning for Ravenous after working on Dread and Samus Returns. Metroid Dread is also currently discounted 30% to $41.99 as part of Nintendo's customer appreciation sale.
