Memorial for Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis unveiled at Staten Island school
A memorial for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis was unveiled at the Michael J. Petrides School in Staten Island on Wednesday. The memorial, named "Mike Ollis Way," features photos and medals honoring Ollis, who died in 2013 while saving a Polish soldier in Afghanistan. The ceremony included family members, students, and community leaders. Attendees presented flowers and art to honor both Ollis and the Polish soldier he saved, Karol Cierpica, who attended with his family. The event emphasized Ollis's legacy, with the school community adopting the motto "Be Like Mike." Ollis received several posthumous awards, including the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. The memorial adds to existing tributes, such as a VFW post and a Staten Island Ferry class named in his honor.
