Mediterranean diet costs rise significantly across Italy

Healthy Mediterranean diets are becoming increasingly expensive in Italy, with prices rising up to 20% and varying significantly by season and region. A study found that the cost of healthy food baskets, based on the Mediterranean diet, increased between August 2021 and March 2024. Prices are generally higher in spring and summer, except for young children. Geographically, Northern provinces tend to have higher average and maximum prices, while minimum prices are often higher in the South, potentially due to less competition in large retail chains.
