Mayfield football gets first NMAA strike after sideline-clearing brawl

The New Mexico Activities Association issued Mayfield High School's football team a first strike under its sportsmanship initiative following a sideline-clearing brawl during a game against Organ Mountain on Friday. A second strike would cancel the remainder of the Trojans' season. The incident occurred in the second quarter when roughly two dozen Mayfield players rushed onto the field during a skirmish, while Organ Mountain received no strike. Multiple players from both teams were suspended, though the NMAA and Las Cruces Public Schools declined to disclose specific numbers. Mayfield players and coaches must complete mandatory sportsmanship education courses, and the district may impose additional disciplinary measures.
