Matthew Jonathan jailed for 32 years for Hereford murder of Jamie Gawler

Matthew Jonathan, 39, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 32 years for the murder of Jamie Gawler, 54, whose body was found in his Hereford flat in January 2025. He will not be eligible for parole until 2057. Jonathan admitted the murder at Worcester Crown Court in April 2025. Police found his phone at a train station in Wales alongside bank cards belonging to both men, and videos on the device showed parts of the attack and Jonathan bragging about going to prison. Gawler had invited Jonathan to stay at his flat, and Jonathan stole his money for alcohol while he lay dying. His body was discovered by his brother after a police officer answered Gawler's phone.
