Mastodon Sued by Estate of Late Guitarist Brent Hinds
The estate of late Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds has filed a civil lawsuit against his former bandmates Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher, and Brann Dailor. The complaint, filed in Fulton County Court on September 3rd, claims Hinds held ownership interests in the band and related businesses at his death. The estate alleges Mastodon offered an $80,000 check to buy out Hinds' interests without a fiscal explanation, and that the check remains uncashed. The lawsuit also accuses the band of using Hinds' image on artwork for their 2026 album "Marrow Deep" without permission, seeking compensation for likeness use and merchandising. Hinds died in a motorcycle accident in August 2025 at age 51, months after leaving the band amid internal strife. The estate claims he was dismissed via email, not mutually as alleged, and criticizes band members for publicly discussing his substance abuse issues. The case has not yet gone before a judge.
