Marylanders favor immediate start for paid leave program

A new poll shows that most Maryland residents want the state's paid family and medical leave program to start on time. According to the survey, 55% oppose delaying the start date, which is currently set for July. Benefits from the program would be available starting in 2026. Despite the support, there are plans to delay the program due to Maryland's budget issues and uncertainty from the federal government. Maryland Labor Secretary Portia Wu mentioned the need for more time to prepare for a system that would effectively support workers. Overall, 82% of those surveyed support the Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program, with many believing it is essential during uncertain times. However, 30% are okay with delaying the program until 2028, which is the current timeline proposed by the state administration. Advocates argue that delays are not acceptable. They stress that people need access to paid leave in times of crisis. Many Marylanders have been affected by federal cutbacks, and they urge state officials to act swiftly to protect workers. The program was already delayed once after its introduction in 2022. At that time, delays were due to political disagreements. If the program is postponed again, it will require new legislation, which state officials are currently working on.
