Martin Lewis discusses proposed changes to UK energy standing charges

Many people in the UK want to eliminate standing charges on energy bills, which cost about £338 a year. Starting January 1, 2024, standing charges will be set at 60.97p per day for electricity and 31.65p for gas. Martin Lewis has criticized these charges, saying they unfairly impact low-income households. Ofgem is reviewing standing charges and plans to consult on a zero standing charge option in early 2025, which could be available next winter. Ofgem noted that while low standing charge tariffs exist, they are not widely available. The regulator is cautious about changing the default for all customers, as it may negatively affect vulnerable households.
