Mars may have significant underground liquid water

New analysis of seismic data from NASA's InSight lander suggests that Mars may have significant amounts of liquid water deep underground. Researchers found evidence of water between 6.2 and 12.4 miles (10 to 20 kilometers) below the surface. This study builds on previous findings from 2024, which indicated the presence of liquid water in the same depth range. The researchers focused on seismic waves to analyze the Martian subsurface, revealing water in porous rock. Previous estimates suggested enough water to cover Mars' surface with a global ocean up to 1.24 miles (2 kilometers) deep. Current technology cannot access this water, leaving its mysteries unexplored.
