Mark Powell nominated for Lackawanna County judgeship as Senate committee advances his candidacy
Governor Josh Shapiro has nominated Mark Powell, the Democratic District Attorney of Lackawanna County, to fill a vacant judgeship on the Lackawanna County Court of Common Pleas. The state Senate Judiciary Committee has recommended his nomination, which will be voted on by the full state Senate. Powell would replace Judge Julia Munley, who left the position after being appointed a federal judge in 2023. If confirmed, Powell will serve until January, when the judgeship will be on the ballot for a full term. Powell has a long legal career, including 27 years at his family law firm. He plans to run for a full 10-year term in the upcoming election. If his nomination is approved, First Assistant District Attorney Brian Gallagher will take over as district attorney until January.
