Man stole identity of deceased relative for decades

The family of Walter Lee Coffman recently discovered that a man wanted by the FBI had stolen his identity. Walter Coffman died in a car crash in 1975 at age 22, and his family was unaware of the identity theft for decades. Seventy-six-year-old Stephen Craig Campbell, charged with attempted murder in 1982, had been living under Coffman's name since disappearing in 1983. FBI agents found fraudulent documents linked to Coffman during a search of Campbell's property. Campbell now faces additional charges for misuse of a passport, alongside his original attempted murder charges. The Coffman family expressed relief that Walter's father never learned about the identity theft before his death in January 2025.
