Malaysia's PM says private sector must lead revival of Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail project

The Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project can only be revived with full private sector participation, according to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The government is currently focused on pressing issues like poverty and healthcare. Anwar stated that mega-projects will be deferred while the government addresses these priorities. Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed openness to new proposals from Malaysia, starting fresh discussions on the HSR project. The HSR project was terminated in 2021 due to disagreements between Malaysia and Singapore. Anwar emphasized the importance of ASEAN cooperation, as Malaysia chairs the group this year, aiming for greater regional integration and competitiveness.
