Maine communities boost local climate action plans to tackle environmental challenges
More communities in Maine are creating local climate action plans to address unique environmental challenges. Recent gatherings, like a sustainability conference, have helped towns like Biddeford and Saco develop strategies for reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy. Biddeford has already passed a climate plan, allowing solar development and installing electric vehicle charging stations. Saco recently adopted its plan and is leveraging $21 million in grants for various climate projects, including beach replenishment and sewer upgrades. Maine's Community Resilience Partnership, established in 2021, supports local efforts with funding. Over 225 communities are enrolled, but some smaller towns struggle with resources to develop their own plans.
