M23 rebels enter eastern Congo's Bukavu as tensions rise
M23 rebels have advanced into Bukavu, a key city in eastern Congo, following their capture of Goma in January. Unlike the violent takeover in Goma, Bukavu's residents reportedly welcomed the rebels, with some taking selfies with them. The Congolese government confirmed the presence of M23 in Bukavu and accused Rwandan troops of entering the city. However, it did not declare that M23 fully controls Bukavu. The U.N. refugee agency reported a rapidly worsening situation, with around 350,000 people displaced. M23's territorial gains have surpassed those of previous rebellions since the end of Congo's major wars in 2003.
