M23 rebels advance on Goma as fighting injures hundreds in eastern DR Congo
M23 rebels have made significant advances towards Goma, a city in eastern DR Congo with about two million residents. Fighting has intensified, resulting in hundreds of injuries among civilians and nine injured United Nations peacekeepers. The rebels recently captured the town of Sake, just 27 kilometers from Goma, which was one of the last routes into the city still controlled by the government. The governor of North Kivu province was killed during the clashes. The ongoing conflict has displaced over 400,000 people this year, worsening conditions in overcrowded displacement centers and leading to a rise in cholera cases, according to the U.N. refugee agency.
