Los Angeles DA recommends sentence reduction for Menendez brothers

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón has recommended reducing the sentences of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who have been in prison since 1996 for murdering their parents. This could make them eligible for parole, a possibility not available before. The Menendez brothers were sentenced to life without parole after a second trial in the mid-1990s. New evidence supporting their claims of childhood abuse has prompted the DA's request for a sentence reduction to 50 years to life. If the judge accepts the recommendation, the brothers could have parole hearings within six months. Their case would then go to Governor Gavin Newsom for final approval.
