Lisbon honors Gloria funicular victims one year after tragedy

Lisbon marks one year since the Gloria funicular derailment, with the city council inaugurating a memorial to the victims while investigations and compensation processes remain ongoing. The accident on September 3, 2025, killed 16 people and injured 24, mostly foreign tourists from 15 nationalities. Five Portuguese victims included the brake guard and four Santa Casa workers. Of 40 compensation claims, only four are concluded, with seven under negotiation and others pending legal or clinical assessments. Investigations by the GPIAAF and Public Prosecutor's Office are expected to conclude by early 2027. The memorial features a 150-year-old olive tree surrounded by 16 limestone blocks bearing victims' names, while the transport workers' union will lay flowers in honor of the deceased brake guard.
