New analysis of seismic data from NASA's InSight lander suggests that liquid water may exist deep underground on Mars. Researchers found evidence of water between 7.1 and 12.4 miles (11.5 and 20 kilometers) below the surface. This conclusion builds on a 2024 proposal and is based on the behavior of seismic waves detected during marsquakes. The study indicates that liquid water could be present on Mars today, not just in ancient times. The findings rely on data from the SEIS instrument, the first seismometer to operate on Mars, which recorded various types of seismic waves. This research adds to the understanding of Mars' subsurface environment.
