Lightning strike causes major power outage in New Zealand affecting 55,000 customers
A lightning strike caused a major power outage in New Zealand's North Island, affecting around 55,000 customers in Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti. Transpower has restored some circuits and is working with local companies to restore power gradually. Power outages have now also impacted the South Island, with severe weather affecting areas like Fairlie and Burkes Pass. Alpine Energy is investigating the situation and working to restore power. In Hawke’s Bay, businesses, including fast food restaurants, have closed due to the outage. Reports of outages extend to Gisborne, Taupō, Napier, Hastings, and further north to Wairoa and the East Coast.
