Light activity offsets cancer death risk from prolonged sitting

techno.nv.ua (Ukrainian)

A study found each additional hour of prolonged sitting linked to a 9% higher risk of cancer death, while replacing it with light activity cut risk by 12%. Researchers from the University of Glasgow analyzed data from 91,292 UK Biobank participants who wore activity monitors for seven days and were followed for about 12 years. More prolonged sitting bouts were also associated with higher overall cancer incidence. The study was observational, so it does not prove causation. Authors noted participants may be healthier than the general population, and the type of sitting activity was unknown. They emphasized light movement matters, but further clinical research is needed.
