Library of Congress reports email breach involving congressional communications

The Library of Congress reported that hackers accessed its email communications with congressional offices from January to September 2024. This breach involved correspondence with Library staff, including the Congressional Research Service. The Library has addressed the software vulnerability that allowed the breach and has referred the incident to law enforcement. An internal analysis is also underway. The notification did not identify the hackers, referring to them only as "the adversary." The Library's communications systems are critical for supporting congressional inquiries, with over 76,000 custom responses provided last year.
