Leyland advises Pirates' Kelly: Be yourself
New Pittsburgh Pirates manager Don Kelly received advice from Hall of Famer Jim Leyland: "Just be Donnie Kelly." Leyland, who managed Kelly during his playing career, believes Kelly has the right temperament to succeed. Leyland, who watched Kelly's managerial debut, emphasized Kelly's ability to connect with players and his understanding of managing people. Kelly's predecessor, Derek Shelton, was fired after a poor start, highlighting the importance of player relationships. Leyland, a mentor to both Kelly and Shelton, believes Kelly should focus on his strengths and not try to be someone else. He also suggested Kelly have a veteran bench coach to help guide him.
