Leonard Abramson, health care innovator and philanthropist, dies at 93

Leonard Abramson, who pioneered one of the first successful health maintenance organizations, U.S. Healthcare, has died at 93. Abramson founded U.S. Healthcare in 1975, a for-profit HMO that grew rapidly and was later sold to Aetna for over $8 billion. He used a portion of the proceeds for significant philanthropic contributions, particularly to cancer research. His substantial donations helped establish the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, contributing to advancements like the gene-altering drug Kymriah.
